2010 Outings - planning under construction

BLNN (Bird Life Northern Natal) has as one of its objectives, the promoting of birding amongst its club members, the wider community and interested parties.  The schedule and itinerary  of various outing will be updated regularly on the web site.

To achieve these objectives one of the activities involved is that people are exposed to birding opportunities, thereby broadening their birding experience and expanding their knowledge of birds in all its wonderful aspects. At the same time people can enjoy nature and new surroundings and open up a new circle of friends.

The different ways of achieving this is by taking part in:

  • Day Outings and / or Overnight Outings,
  • Long Weekend Outings
  • Yearly Safari Excursion  (min 2 weeks or longer)
  • Inter Club Excursions or Privately Organized Club Member Trips.

1.  Birding Day Outings or Overnight Outings

These are intended to create and promote birding under club members, newcomers to the birding fraternity, but it is also open to non members or families on an exploratory basis.

  • The main principle is that these outings are held regular on the Saturday following the monthly meeting as far as this is possible. The  detail wiil be shown and updated on the http//www.blnn.org.za/  web site.
  • That day excursion are held within max 100 km radius of Newcastle
  • That a knowledgeable birder leads such trip. This is to assist with getting to the venue, guiding participants in the area and helps with the finding and identification of birds if and when required.
  • Persons who come along must provide their own transport (on certain occasions 4x4 or Off-Road type vehicles are necessary), their own meals and refreshment if required.  Driving together and pooling vehicles at the original departure point can of course be organized among the attendees themselves.
  • An attempt will be made to choose departure points where the safety of cars can hopefully be assured should pooling of cars be done.
  • In certain cases overnight accommodation might also be available for persons wishing to do so.  The type, quantity and quality of such accommodation will vary from different places but will not be guaranteed. The club member leading the excursion will hopefully be able to assist with the bookings. Normally the first people paying for the bookings are allocated a space.

  2.  Long Weekend Outings

These Outings are open to club members only,

In certain cases bookings for persons can be accepted if they intend to join the club before the departure date.

  • The main features are that these weekend outings are held mainly over long weekends. On certain occasions it is required to make a trip longer than a long weekend.  i.e. Kruger Park type excursions
  • These excursion are normally held within max 400 km radius of Newcastle
  • Most of these excursions are on a Camping / Caravanning basis. Nothing prohibits anybody from booking his own alternate accommodation or chalet if available.
  • A club member will be requested to organize and lead such a trip.
  • Persons who come along provide their own transport  ( on certain occasions 4x4 or Off-Road type vehicles are necessary), Driving together and pooling vehicles by participants can of course be organized among the attendees themselves and is encouraged, to be able to cut costs.
  • Meals and other activities are normally bought centrally and prepared on a rotational basis by participating members.
  • In certain cases accommodation outside San Parks or KZN parks can be booked centrally and paid for after bookings have been confirmed and payment received.   Due to the Exit permit requirement at SAN Parks and KZN Parks it is necessary that vehicle owners book and pay for their and their fellow campers accommodation separately.
  • The first people paying for the bookings are allocated a space where availability is a limiting factor.

4. Inter Club Excursions or Privately Organized Club Member Trips.

The aim for these outings are to encourage spontaneous interaction by club members. This gives persons a method of inviting friends or others to join on an outing or trip. This could even be used to plan for Birdlife SA Birding Big Day’s or even for Sabap2 atlas counting days.

This could also help in finding good company or to provide a bigger party for a more  secure feeling in any birding / or camping trip.

  • These intentions could be announced at the monthly club meetings
  • It could be advertised on our Web site with the details filled in below. Send e-mail to  club secretary Rina.Pretorius@gijima.com
  • For short notice: SMS messages could be used to inform members. Send e-mail to club secretary or phone detail to her at 083 3270789.
  • The club will only provide the channel for this. All organizing is done by participants themselves.
